There doesn't seem to be anything much sadder than when a child dies. We've eradicated a lot of the causes (in first world countries) that this happens but before then it was kind of a miracle if a kid made it past 5 years or so. Some cultures didn't even name their children or give them proper names until they were 2 and the chances of survival went way up.
Of course in Christian cultures, lambs and children are pretty intertwined in symbolism and that shows up frequently in American graves of a certain period.

Something about the worn state of the lamb on this headstone makes it just a little sadder in retrospect.
